Let’s Start Something Big

Julie Savard

Local residents were all VIPs Thursday night as they walked the red carpet at the Park Theatre, to the sound of live music and the flashing lights of the paparazzi. The over 200 attendees were all vying for the same award: the Vitalization of Downtown Cobourg.

The Downtown Vitalization Launch event got underway with an introduction from Kevin Narraway, Business Development Officer for the project, outlining the tasks already undertaken and those near completion. Mayor Brocanier followed with an inspiring address.

The crowd was engaged as the stage was set for the unveiling of the evening’s theme, Past, Present and Future. Rob Mikel, a native of Cobourg, has had Cobourg’s history close to his heart for more than three decades and enlightened us with pictures and research of Cobourg past. Andre Hall, DBIA Co-coordinator, spoke to the present state of downtown Cobourg and left his captive audience with the thought that we, as members of this community, wear a muddier version of the proverbial rose-coloured glasses than those of our visitors. Vignettes showcased downtown business owners’, seasoned and new alike, with their interpretation of Downtown Cobourg.

I5 Research’s Senior Analyst, Matt Campbell spoke on the challenges to come in the fields of technology and research and Fleming College’s School of Business and Justice Dean, James Drennan, spoke on the educational opportunities in the trades, apprenticeships and services.

The evening wrapped up with Kevin Narraway revealing the future projects along with their ambitious time lines.

With Kevin at the helm, a fully mobilized Task Force and volunteers recruited to assist with the working groups, real progress is being made. Watch for updates on the Town of Cobourg website: www.cobourg.ca
