Lennox & Addington County and the surrounding region is becoming a leader in Ontario’s emerging green industry and can offer companies a strong connection to local research and training partnerships, an abundant supply chain and access to markets.
First Light Solar Park, a joint initiative between Sun Edison and SkyPower, really got the ball rolling for Lennox & Addington in this industry. The project, a 9.1 megawatt photovoltaic solar park in Stone Mills Township, put Lennox & Addington on the solar map in North America and around the world. When it began supplying electricity to the grid in September 2009, it was the largest park of its kind in Canada. The second phase of the project is currently under construction and is expected to double the park’s output.
The proximity to markets and existing skill-set makes L&A a prime location for manufacturing investment. Many of L&A’s local contractors, construction companies, and fabricators gained valuable experience in the construction of First Light and has given them an edge in other projects happening in our region. Within L&A there are eight proposed solar farms totaling 80 MW and two proposed off-shore wind projects (Trillium Wind Power – 420 MW & Wolfe Island Shoal – 300 MW. In total, 240 mW of solar and 500 mW of wind projects currently under construction or are planned within a 2 hour drive of L&A’s borders and our local companies are involved in their implementation.
The Lennox & Addington Economic Development Office recently launched a new website highlighting L&A’s advantages and opportunities in green sector. Geared toward decision makers in renewables industry, www.LandARenewableEnergy.com lists various supply chain opportunities currently available in L&A and offers information about Ontario’s favourable tax-credits, available incentives including the popular Feed-in-Tariff Program, and the superior R&D opportunities available to those who choose to invest here.
