Kawartha Lakes is Thriving!

Kawartha Lakes

Dairy producers of both cattle and goats in the East Central Ontario area have been considering a means to regenerate the extensive export market for their livestock and genetics that used to exist prior to the BSE crisis of 2003. Supported initially by a funding grant from the Agriculture Management Institute, a pilot project has been initiated to form a marketing alliance of breeders from Kawartha Lakes, Durham and Peterborough with superior animals for which this area is known for around the world.  Target markets will include not only selected European countries where traditional sales have happened, but also emerging markets such as those found in East Asia and elsewhere.

In an economy such as Kawartha Lakes, which is dominated by small business, it is very important to encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a career, and to give them the chance to experience it while they are young, so they are better prepared to take on the challenge when they are finished school. This is the aim of Summer Company, a province wide initiative of the government of Ontario, which is offered locally through the Kawartha Lakes Small Business Centre (KLSBEC). Back again for 2012, this program has grown in popularity over the last few years as more and more young people become interested in exploring this exciting opportunity.  This year we have maximized the number of available to Kawartha Lakes and have 9 students participating in the program.  We look forward to assisting these young entrepreneurs with there summer company.

City of Kawartha Lakes has just rolled out our Heritage Master Plan to the stakeholders within the community.  We are receiving valuable feedback from these stakeholders to be used for future development of the plan and for recommendations to council.

In Fenelon Falls, a BR+E project has just been completed and the findings of the project are being presented to the public asking for their input.  Eagerly awaiting what the next steps will be for this community to assist in the development of long term strategies for growth and prosperity.
