From One Generation To The Next

Port Hope

A Third Generation Port Hope Business is going strong

Few family businesses survive into a third generation but R. Wakely and Sons Ltd – owners and operators of Wakely Disposals Ltd. – is a shining example of a business that made it work.

The success of the business dates back to Ronald C. Wakely (Grandfather) who purchased farmland from his father Sid Wakely (Great Grandfather).  Ronald C. Wakely started the business in 1945, operating as a scrap metal yard and trucking firm until 1969.  At this time, Ron’s two sons, Michael and Ronald joined the business and saw the business expand into steel sales and waste removal.  In 1972 the business was incorporated as R. Wakely and Sons Ltd. and in 2007 began operations as Wakely Disposals Ltd.  In May of 2009 Tony J. Wakely and Mike G. Wakely took over operations.

The business has experienced challenges over the years with recessions, changes in market demand and out of town competition vying for market share.  To remain competitive the business has focused on three major areas of service: Scrap Metal Recycling, Garbage Container Service and Steel Sales.  R. Wakely and Sons is an environmentally friendly operation holding all the required licenses and insurance for recycling and waste removal – including Ministry of the Environment certificates.

But even companies that survive on longtime relationships must be agile enough to build around change – being supportive of younger generation family members when they take over the operations.  This has been evident in the guidance provided to upcoming family members along with a strong work ethic and pride in the family business.  There is also a lot of the pride in their community as seen through their long time membership with the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce.

We salute the third generation business of Wakely Disposals Ltd. and wish them continued success and growth within the Municipality of Port Hope.
