A Stroll Through Victoria Park

Julie Savard

It’s a well known fact that Cobourg is renowned for its white sandy beach cradling the shores of Lake Ontario. Every summer more and more people discover and enjoy its beauty. But the beach is only a part of a bigger landscape: Victoria Park.  And although it boasts of serene surroundings, on occasion it does come alive with activity. If you’ve never been, come take a stroll with me!

Amongst the fully landscaped park of mature trees, ornate flower beds and lush grass is the band shell standing sentry in Victoria Park since 1934. Its home to The Concert Band of Cobourg on Tuesday nights and showcases the Cobourg Music Experience (CME) Thursday nights. It allows the community and visitors alike to break away from their routine and come tap their feet and snap their fingers to the sound of music in Cobourg.

It’s the place to be on Canada Day Weekend! The Waterfront Festival takes over the park for three fabulous days of fun. As one of Canada’s largest open-air fine art and craft shows, the festival presents hundreds of unique and talented artists and crafters surrounded by outdoor fun.

You know you are creeping up in age when you detect a model of your first car in the Lakeside Antique & Classic Car Show. This annual event in Victoria Park brings you back in time with a grand finale (well for me) of their departure as they parade down the streets of Cobourg to once again find their way home.

You’ll return to your high school years when the Driftwood Theatre Group rolls into town to entertain Shakespearean followers with works of this English poet and playwright. This year they present “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. I can’t wait to be lost in the dialect of one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage.

And then to end the year with a bang, our beloved Victoria Park puts on a spectacular show as the park comes aglow with festive lights for Christmas Magic.

So if you are enjoying the day at our beach, go a few metres north my friend, and take in the park’s splendor.

Enjoy the summer!
